World Leather Day returns to celebrate the benefits of leather
Due to be held on the 26th of April 2023, the World Leather Day initiative aims once again to promote and encourage a greater understanding of the positive attributes of leather
Created in 2022 by the leather industry non-profits Leather Naturally (LN) and Leather Working Group (LWG), the World Leather Day comes back this year to promote the benefits of leather, namely its durability and upcycled nature, thus emphasizing its position as a preferable sustainable material.
“Simply put, without it, around 10 million tonnes would go to landfill. In a world where we are trying to do more with less, keep waste to a minimum, and where we have the expertise and the technology to turn this by-product [of the food industry] into a versatile, long-lasting material, we have a responsibility to do just that”, reads the website of LN on the event’s page.
To this end, on the 26th, members of the upholstery, footwear and bags industries will take part in a global social media campaign focused on leather's attributes to help change the negative narrative that surrounds leather. Additionally, 2023's celebration also highlights the importance of responsible manufacturing, pointing out several certifications that regulate the leather-making process.
