Webinar: The life of COVID on leather
The webinar organised by the BFA will present the latest findings from researchers from De Montfort University and will answer questions such as How long can COVID-19 survive on shoe leather? and Is there a risk associated with cardboard shoeboxes?

This free global webinar is taking place on Wednesday 24th November at 4:30pm (London time). Those joining the event will hear first-hand the results of sector-specific research by Professor Katie Laird and Doctor Maitreyi Shivkumar from De Montfort University.

The study has focused on the stability of a model human coronavirus on different types of leather commonly used in shoemaking, as well as the efficiency of transfer to materials associated with the shoe industry such as stainless steel (sewing machines) and cardboard (shoe boxes). Additionally, researchers demonstrated that leathers coated with an antiviral coating significantly reduced the stability and transfer of the coronavirus.

“I am pleased that this study has found some concrete information for the footwear industry that can now be transformed into actionable guidance to boost consumer confidence and give customers greater peace of mind, whether they are browsing, trying on or taking their goods home", commented Lucy Reece Raybould, CEO, BFA - British Footwear Association.
