Tata to expand footwear production and create thousands of new jobs
Indian conglomerate Tata has announced it aims to triple the size of its footwear factory, based near its largest tannery in Dewas
The decision seems to follow the recognition about the changes taking place in the Indian market, particularly amongst young, professional women. A shift from traditional saris to skirts and trouser suits seems to be the origin of an increasing demand for more fashionable women’s shoes.
The Dewas based footwear factory is allegedly going to be expanded to produce to 2.5 million pairs of shoes per year (an huge increment of production form the current 700 000 million pairs). This expansion is said to have the potential to create 4 000 jobs.
