Retail sales down by 1.8% in Hungary
In the first month of 2021, the volume of retail sales decreased by 2.6% according to raw data and by 1.8% when adjusted for calendar effects compared to the same period of the previous year, according to data by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH)
In January 2021, the volume of retail sales decreased by 2.6% according to raw data and by 1.8% when adjusted for calendar effects compared to the same period of the previous year.

The seasonally and calendar-adjusted volume of retail sales increased by 0.5% compared to the previous month.

In January 2021, the volume of sales, adjusted for calendar effects, increased by 1.5% in specialized and non-specialized food shops and decreased by 2.2% in non-food retail trade and by 8.5% in automotive fuel retailing. The volume of sales increased by 3.4% in non-specialized food and beverages shops accounting for 76% of food retailing and decreased by 3.3% in specialized food, beverage and tobacco stores. The turnover of non-food retailing decreased by a total of 2.2%. Sales rose in non-specialized shops dealing in manufactured goods (9.2%). The volume of sales fell in pharmaceutical, medical goods and cosmetics shops (8.2%), furniture and electrical goods stores (13%), books, computer equipment and other specialized stores (14%), textiles, clothing and footwear shops (21%) as well as in second hand goods shops (24%).

The volume of mail order and internet retailing accounting for 9.4% of all retail sales and involving a wide range of goods rose by 36%, continuing a multi-year expansion.

The volume of sales in automotive fuel stations decreased by 8.5%.Sales in motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts and accessories stores not belonging to retail data decreased by 26%.

In January 2021, domestic retail sales amounted to HUF 948 billion at current prices (roughly 2,58 billion euros). In the same period, specialized and non-specialized food shops accounted for 48% of all retail sales, while the relevant figures for non-food retail trade of petrol stations were 37% and 15% respectively.
