Pharrell Williams is Louis Vuitton's new Men's Creative Director
The luxury Maison has announced the appointment of the musician and entrepreneur Pharrell Williams as its new Men's Creative Director, effective immediately
“I am glad to welcome Pharrell back home, after our collaborations in 2004 and 2008 for Louis Vuitton, as our new Men's Creative Director. His creative vision beyond fashion will undoubtedly lead Louis Vuitton towards a new and very exciting chapter”, commented Pietro Beccari, Louis Vuitton's Chairman and CEO. The appointment fills one of fashion's most high-profile vacancies, open since the death of Virgil Abloh in November 2021, being Beccari's first big decision since assuming the leadership of Louis Vuitton on the 1st of February.
Pharrell Williams, who has established himself as a "cultural, global icon over the past twenty years" by exploring creatively different art forms, is no stranger to fashion. He founded the streetwear brands Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream footwear in 2003 and he is also co-owner of the streetwear brand Human Made, with Kenzo’s creative director Nigo, and of G-Star Raw Denim. Williams is also a regular collaborator of Tiffany.
The luxury brand emphasizes that “the way in which he breaks boundaries across the various worlds he explores aligns with Louis Vuitton’s status as a Cultural Maison, reinforcing its values of innovation, pioneer spirit and entrepreneurship”. The appointment does appear to be in line with the trajectory pursued by past creative directors, who brought a fresh perspective on fashion. Its parent company, LVMH, which usually does not break out performances for individual brands, noted that in 2022 “Louis Vuitton had an excellent year, again driven by its exceptional creativity, the quality of its products and its strong ties with art and culture”.
Williams' first collection for Louis Vuitton will be revealed this June during the Men's Fashion Week in Paris.
