Pakistan's footwear exports with good performance
May was marked by double digit growth on the country’s footwear exports, both in volume and value. Accumulated growth in the year anticipates a good annual performance
In May 2018, the volume of Pakistan's exported footwear increased by 17.0% compared to similar period in 2017; 806 thousand pairs rising to 943 thousand pairs. In terms of value, exported footwear grew from 80.1 million US dollars in May 2017 to 9.25 million US dollars in May 2018 (+15.5%), according to data released by PBS (Pakistan Bureau of Statistics).
Leather footwear, representing 88.5% of the total value of exported footwear in the period, increased its volume and value of exports by 73.0% and by 27.7%, respectively, increasing from 6.4 million US dollars in May 2017 to 8.2 million US dollars in May 2018.
During the period July 2017-May 2018 Pakistan exported 9.34 million pairs of shoes valued at 97.41 million US dollars. This compares with exports of 9.17 million pairs valued at 87.33 million US dollars in a similar period of the previous financial year, reflecting moderate growth in terms of volume (+1.8%) and double-digit growth in terms of value (+11.6%).
Leather footwear sales abroad, representing the largest share in footwear exports in the period (88.6%), reached 86.18 million US dollars, growing by 16.40% during the first eleven months of the year with volumes up by 20.22% during the period (totaling 5.8 million pairs).
According to the World Footwear Yearbook (available here), in 2016, Pakistan was the 7th largest producer of footwear, with 399 million pairs and a world share of 1.7%.
