Pakistan: leather and footwear exports on the rise
In the first nine months of the current fiscal year, footwear exports grew by 17.92% in value, totalling 116.6 million US dollars. Leather footwear exports represent roughly 80% of the total
According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), from July 2021 to March 2022, leather manufacturers exports increased by 8.46% in value, generating 463.9 million US dollars, as compared to the revenue of 427.7 million US dollars reported in the same period of the previous fiscal year.
In this period, tanned leather exports amounted to 154.5 million US dollars, reflecting an increase in both volume (49.56%) and value (36.35%), on a comparable basis to the first nine months of the fiscal year 2020-2021.
Footwear
In the first nine months of the current fiscal year, it were sent abroad 5.84 million pairs of leather footwear, at the value of 92.78 million US dollars. These figures reflect an increase of 13.29% in value and 2.37% in volume, on a comparable basis to the same period of the prior fiscal year.In this period, other footwear exports increased by 39.08% in value (23.18 million US dollars) and by 14.70% in volume (7.96 million pairs of shoes). Canvas footwear exports, in turn, declined by 48.17% in volume, but grew by 84.48% in volume.
Pakistan Footwear Industry
Mostly focused on the domestic market, the Pakistani footwear industry is the 7th largest in the world. The World Footwear 2021 Yearbook (AVAILABLE HERE) indicates that, in 2020, the country manufactured 483 million pairs of shoes, which reflects a world share of 2.4%. However, last year, footwear exports decreased by 8%. Although Pakistan’s destination exports are widely spread geographically, it sources predominantly textile footwear from China.Pakistan’s fiscal year runs from July to June.
