We spoke to Nikolai Christensen, Founder of MOVV, to learn more about his new minimalist and functional Scandinavian footwear venture. We talked about the company’s mission, challenges and recent initiatives
MOVV is a Scandinavian brand designed to address a common issue for runners—injuries often caused by inadequate footwear. Founded by Nikolai Christensen, the company focuses on creating minimalist, functional running shoes that prioritize comfort and performance. We spoke with Christensen to learn about the inspiration behind MOVV, the challenges of launching the brand and its future plans.

Mission

Christensen identified a significant problem in the running world: many runners experience injuries due to poorly designed footwear. "I noticed that many runners were sidelined due to injuries caused by their footwear", he notes. 

MOVV was created to bridge this gap by directly engaging with users to design footwear based on their needs and experiences. "I believe there is a future where we interact to make better products for tomorrow's runners via our joint experience and knowledge", Christensen shares.

Competitive Advantage

With over 20 years of experience in the footwear industry, including a role as Vice President of Lifestyle at Ecco, Christensen brings a solid background in product development to MOVV.

"Between running and casual footwear, there is a vast divide", the Founder notes. Christensen believes that his vast experience allows him to develop a product at a deeper level of knowledge and at a faster pace than competitors. 

In addition, MOVV's current ownership of experience data differentiates the brand from its competitors. This data is based on more than one million foot scans and 25 years of human anatomy.

Challenges

Launching a new brand is always challenging. Building recognition and meeting expectations in a competitive market require strategic planning. To address these issues, MOVV has partnered with Kaiser Sport & Orthopedic and Runners Lab to gain insights into running-related injuries and improve product design.

"We differentiate ourselves by heavily relying on user-based data in its design process. By collecting feedback from runners and analyzing data on common injuries", – he continues –"MOVV can tailor its shoe designs to address specific pain points".

Building a Community

MOVV’s goals extend beyond creating a great product. The brand recently launched a podcast and newsletter to engage with its community and share helpful information, such as training advice and injury prevention tips. "These initiatives align with the brand’s mission to foster a sense of belonging and support among its users, encouraging them to stay active and connected", Christensen asserts.

MOVV’s philosophy centres on progress and joy, forming the core of its identity as a brand. "This philosophy shapes the brand’s future by driving its commitment to continuous improvement and innovation", the Founder shares.
