Namibian charity donates leather shoes for children to go to school
The Never Walk Alone project, launched by Tim Ekandjo in August 2021, has to date donated over 7 850 pairs of leather shoes to help children go to school
The charity actually donates shoes to any Namibian who cannot afford a pair, but insofar it has “prioritised school kids because they are most vulnerable, and they walk long distances to school, especially in rural Namibia”, explained Tim Ekandjo to the local media. “This is a high-quality leather shoe, also called the velskoen, which can be worn to school and everywhere else”, he added.
Since the project was launched in 2021, the charity has delivered 7 850 pairs in the Hardap, Omaheke, Erongo, Kavango East, Kavango West, Khomas, Kunene and Ohangwena regions. But the aim is to hand out 10 000 pairs by next year. Ekandjo also underlined that the team is committed to the vision of giving barefoot children a pair of shoes because they recognize it has a positive impact on their confidence.
Aarde Mwoongeli, school principal of Oshikuni Primary School, whose children were the latest recipients of a 176 donation of leather shoes, thanked the charity claiming that “these shoes will have a positive impact on the learners”, who suffer “especially, during winter times”.
