According to T Ramasami the leather industry has been responsible for the creation of nearly three million jobs with significant impact on social equity and gender empowerment, being a major contributor to favor export trade balance (in 20 years exports generated by the sector more than tripled). He added the relevance of the industry as a technology-led job creator and as taking development to people rather than people to development, which leads to urbanization.

Ramasami continued defending the country should focus on quality enhancement and brand building as he predicts the emergence of a niche for leather products. In this sense, a special note was added to defend the increment of footwear design schools.

CLRI, one of the world's largest Leather Research Institutes, was founded in 1948 and today is a central hub in the Indian leather sector with direct roles in education, research, training, testing, designing, forecasting, planning, social empowerment and leading in science and technology relating to leather. State-of-art facilities in CLRI support, innovation in leather processing, creative designing of leather products viz. leather garment, leather goods, footwear and development of novel environmental technologies for leather sector.
