Hermès opens Wanderland
The exhibition will debut at the Saatchi Gallery in London, and then will tour to Paris, Italy and China
Hermès, the iconic French-based luxury house will open the doors of its new Wanderland exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery. The exhibition is dedicated to flânerie, or the act of wandering the city streets and drinking in the details of everyday life.
The objects on show have been taken from the Hermès archive, the museum collection of Emile Hermès at 24 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris, and have transformed the top floor of the Saatchi Gallery spreading objects over several rooms. The eleven rooms present a series of installations in various media, created by a diverse selection of artists. From the Parisian square, to the covered passage, or a cafe of forgotten objects this veritable extended cabinet of curiosities will delight and intrigue visitors, inviting each of them to open their eyes, free their minds and be enveloped by the colour, sounds and images that surround them.
“Flânerie, that wonderfully liberating art of urban wandering, is second nature to Hermès, one could even say our most profound nature”, recounts Pierre-Alexis Dumas, the house’s Artistic Director and sixth generation member, evoking the 2015 Hermès theme.
“The journey through Wanderland draws its coherence from two intrinsic elements of la flânerie: dreaming and freedom of spirit”, explains Bruno Gaudichon, curator of La Piscine-Musée d'Art et d'Industrie in Roubaix, who was commissioned to create the exhibition.
Mr Gaudichon, curator of La Piscine-Musée d'Art et d'Industrie in Roubaix created the exhibition, and Hubert le Gall was in charge of the magical set designs. Hermès have also collaborated with Actes Sud to create a book for the exhibit.
Hermès' Wanderland opens today in London (9th of April) and runs until the 2nd of May, moving to Paris in September, Turin, Italy in December, and then China next year.
