German online footwear sales declined by 16.6% in 2022
With consumer spending taking a hit due to the war in Ukraine, online sales fell by 8.8% in 2022, year-over-year. But the footwear sector was the most affected, says BEVH
A survey from the German association of e-commerce and mail order trade, BEVH, indicates that in nominal terms, without adjusting for inflation, online sales dropped by 8.8% last year to 90.4 billion euros, as compared to sales of 99.1 billion euros in the previous year. Still, compared to pre-pandemic levels (2019) – which propelled the growth of e-commerce – online sales were still up by 24.5% in 2022.
But online footwear sales took the biggest hit, with sales falling by 16.6% last year, amounting to 4.50 billion euros, on a comparable basis to the 5.45 billion euros recorded in 2021. Clothing sales, for example, were down by 12.8% to 16.79 billion euros from 19.72 billion euros in the prior year.
“The crisis clearly took its toll on online sales, too. The noticeable reluctance to buy, especially for items that are not immediately necessary, reflects the current insecurity of people combined with the increased cost of living” commented BEVH's president Gero Furchheim.
The data also shows that multichannel retailers were more affected than pure online players. Despite recording a decline in sales, manufacturers, in particular, still outperformed the market.
