Footwear exports in Pakistan continue to decline
May was marked by declines in the country’s footwear exports, both in volume and value. Poor performance across all categories of products
In May 2017, the volume of Pakistan's exported footwear decreased by 5.66% compared to similar period in 2016: 884 thousand pairs declining from 937 thousand pairs. In terms of value, exported footwear dropped from 10.30 million US dollars in may 2016 to 7.60 million US dollars in may 2017, according to data recently released by PBS (Pakistan Bureau of Statistics).
Leather footwear, representing 78.87% of the total value of exported footwear, increased its exported quantities by 27.5%, but this movement was accompanied by a fall in the value of exports of 26.74%: although quantities exported of leather footwear increase form 440 thousand pairs in may 2016 to 561 million pairs in may 2017, its value dropped from 8.17 million US dollars to 6.00 million US dollars.
During the period July 2016 – May 2017 Pakistan 8.95 million pairs of shoes valued at 86.91 million US dollars. This compares with exports of 10.99 million pairs valued at 99.73 million US dollars in a similar period of 2016, reflecting declines in terms of volume (-18.52%) and value (-12.86%).
Leather footwear sales, representing the largest share in footwear exports in the period (61.62%), reached 73.62 million US dollars going down by 8.45% during the first eleven months of the year with volumes up by 6.16%. Double digit declines in volume and value for canvas and other footwear categories were also registered in the period.
