Debt restructuring launched at shoemaker Alpina
The District Court in Kranj, Slovenia, has launched debt restructuring proceedings at footwear maker Alpina, after accumulation of a debt totaling 42 million euros
The Žiri-based company filed a proposal for court-mandated debt restructuring at the end of June, after it failed to agree on debt restructuring with the creditor banks. The debt, in excess of 40 million euros, was mostly the result of a failed management buyout. The restructuring proposal antecipates a debt-to-equity conversion in the range of 5 to 15 million euros. According to the Slovenian press an official receiver has been appointed by the court and the Bank Asset Management Company, already holding some of the claims towards Alpina, is expected to play the main role in the debt restructuring proceedings.

Alpina director Matjaž Delopst is being quoted as having confirmed that the debt restructuring will not involve suppliers but only the financial claimants. He added that the company will be in a position to pay off half of its debt to banks in the next ten years. His expectations are based on this year's results and future plans, which project a 3% to 5% annual growth.

In the first five months of 2014, Alpina announced 16.9 million euros in sales revenue, almost 10% above revenue in the same period in the previous year. The company also announced a reduction of 364 thousand euros in operating losses, during the same period. The Slovenian part of the Alpina group is expected to finish the year with 49.6 million euros in sales revenue and net profit of 340 thousand euros.

The Alpina business group, in addition to the main company Alpina, d.o.o., Žiri, Slovenia, consists of other companies based in neighboring countries Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Ukraine, Romania, Kosovo and Macedonia, and also in China and in the United States.

The history of the company dates back to 1947, when various shoemaking workshops joined under the name Žiri Shoe Factory. Four years later the sports footwear plant changed its name to Alpina, and in 1952 the company started making all kinds of footwear. During the decade of 1950, the company initiated its retail strategy by opening its first location in Sarajevo (1953). The 50s, 60s and 70s were marked by important changes in the manufacturing process, such as introduction of the machine production (1955), beginning of the assembly-line production (1960) and opening of new production facilities. In 1995 the company reached the historical high of two million pairs of shoes, with almost 2 000 employees in its structure, and 4 years later new computer technologies such water jet cutter and sewing machine started to be used. The recent years were marked by several design awards attributed to its cross-county ski boots. Today, Alpina operates as a joint stock company, producing approximately 1.7 million pairs of shoes and boots each year. As per data issued by the company, in 2012 Alpina owned 131 retail divisions in Slovenia and in five markets in southeast Europe.
