Cost of merchandise and raw materials is the main concern of the industry
In the current edition of World Footwear Business Conditions Survey, problems associated with the cost of merchandise and raw materials account for more than 80% of responses relating to the main difficulties felt by the footwear industry
This concern is shared by every line of business, but it seems more important to footwear manufacturers than to footwear traders.
Additionally, all respondents in North America mentioned the cost of merchandise as a source of concern, while in other continents this is also a relevant difficulty with percentages between 75% in South America and Africa and 85% in Asia.
Also at the top of the difficulties faced by the footwear business is the persistence of “insufficient demand”, both in international markets and at home, accounting for 41% and 42% of answers, respectively. The concern with insufficient demand in international markets is more evident in Asia (70%), while insufficient demand in home markets reaches a higher percentage of responses in Europe (49%).
Human resource problems (38%) now seem more concerning than financial difficulties (26%).
Problems associated with competition in the domestic and foreign markets are less relevant in this edition, as are difficulties associated with taxes, regulatory requirements, lack of adequate equipment or legal obstacles to trade, as well as weather conditions.
