Brazilian footwear exports show signs of recovery
Local footwear companies exported roughly 10 million pairs of shoes in August, increasing by 10.6% compared to similar month in 2015, based on figures released by Abicalçados
The Brazilian Shoe Manufacturers Association (Abicalçados) estimates that during the month of August, Brazil exported 87.7 million US dollars’ worth of footwear. This represents an increase in both quantity (+10.6%) and value (27%) of footwear exported, when compared to similar month in 2015. Taking into account the first eight months of the year, Brazil has exported 76.5 million pairs of shoes, with a total value of 617.8 million US dollars, reflecting increases of 2.6% and 0.8%, respectively.
Heitor Klein, Executive President of Abicalçados, stated that the slight recovery of Brazilian footwear exports was the result of a strong performance of local companies at international trade fairs during recent months, despite the economic turmoil and the exchange rate volatility.
The main destination for footwear exports between January and August was the US, with sales to this country reaching 8 million pairs with a total value of 140.8 million US dollars. Argentina follows with 6 million pairs exported and with total value of 67.44 million US dollars. France completes the top 3 of main destinations (5.37 million pairs; 37.3 million US dollars). It is worth to underline that exports to both the US and Argentina have increased in the period (both in quantity and value), but France registered declining performance in quantities exported and value of sales.
According to the World Footwear Yearbook, in 2015 Brazil was the 5th largest producer of footwear with 877 million pairs and a world quota of 3.8%.
