Brazil: footwear exports increased in June compared to May
After four consecutive months of decline, footwear exports from Brazil increased in June compared to the previous month, in both volume and value. When compared to similar period last year, the decline rate in pairs and revenue was above 40%
According to data prepared by Abicalçados, the Brazilian Association of Footwear Industries, 3.6 million pairs were sold abroad in June, generating 35.6 million US dollars, up by 32.7% in volume and by 49% in value in comparison with May. When compared to similar period last year, a decline of 44.6% in pairs and in 47% in revenue was registered.
Looking into the accumulated for the semester, a total of 43 million pairs were exported, generating 330.5 million US dollars, decreasing in volume (-24.6%) and in revenue (-31.2%), compared to the first semester of the previous year.
Executive President Haroldo Ferreira underlined that the numbers already point to a "cooling of the crisis in the international market", with the gradual resumption of consumption in some of the main markets: "There is already an improvement in the environment, but we are still far below our usual performance", concluded Mr. Ferreira, stressing out that exports in 2020 should decline by between 22% and 30%.
In the first semester, the main destination for Brazilian footwear abroad was the United States, to which 4.4 million pairs were exported for 67.26 million US dollars, down by 31.5% and 34%, respectively, compared to the similar period in 2019. The second destination was Argentina, where 3.2 million pairs were shipped, which generated 32.4 million US dollars, resulting in decreases of 8% in pairs and 25.5% in revenue compared to last year. The third destination was France, to which 2.97 million pairs were exported, equivalent to 25 million US dollars, decreases both in volume (-14.4%) and in dollars (-4.2%) compared to the corresponding period last year.
