Bolflex promotes a circular economy
The Portuguese company of footwear components has announced to have recycled 1 200 tons of raw material in 2020, doubling the quantity as compared to the previous year
"It is an economic added-value. Bolflex’s commitment to recycling is not only to maintain, but to reinforce. Despite having doubled our raw material recycling capacity, we still believe that there is a lot of room to grow”, said António Ferreira, the founder of Bolflex. Therefore, the company has been investing to reach a recycling capacity of 5 000 tons per year.

Environmental concerns are not news at Bolflex, which works continuously to develop advanced recycling techniques. The SH-Rouber, for example, is a new sole that contains recycled shoes in its formulation. Initially, they are crushed into powder, then burned and,  afterwards, 30% of the recycled compound is added to a new rubber formulation, arising at the end an innovative ecological product, which follows all the required chemical guarantees. The devulcanization of used footwear to make new products has already been patented by the company.

"When we recycle, we promote a circular economy and develop an economically valuable product with excellent performance. The final (recycled) products maintain the same physical, mechanical and chemical features of the virgin material”. The responsible for the company ensures that, despite all recycled tons, there is yet a lot to do. "I find it difficult to understand how so many tons of raw material are wasted”, he added.
