Belgium: start of the summer sales put back to 1st of August
This year’s summer sales will start a month later than normal in Belgium. The decision to postpone the start of the sales by a month is an attempt to mitigate the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic on retail
Many retailers, especially from the clothing and footwear segments, have been asking the local authorities to postpone the sales period in order to mitigate the losses caused by the Covid-19 diffusion and resulting lockdown. 90% of Belgian fashion retailers signed an open letter defending the postponement to allowing them to sell their collections without facing unfair competition. Several large retail chains opposed to the proposal to put back the sales.
The period preceding the sales period, in which all price reductions are banned, will take place in July instead of June, as it normally does.
