Bangladesh leather industry with positive performance
After closing the previous fiscal year with exports of the leather industry at 797.6 million US dollars, Bangladesh has set a target for the current financial year of 920.00 million US dollars. In the first ten months, the industry managed to grow and has met its objectives
In the first ten months of the current financial year (July 2020 - April 2021) the leather industry in Bangladesh has exported 760.92 million US dollars, up by 8.56% from similar period in the previous year. Export level for the period was over the target set by 0.84%.
Main contributing category was leather footwear, with exports with a global value of 461.72 million US dollars in the period July 2020 - April 2021, and the target for the period was met by 4.24%. This category of products represented in the period 60.7% of the total exports of the leather industry and has grown by 11.76% from similar period in the previous fiscal year.
Finished leather exports generated 96.10 million US dollars in the first ten months of the year, up by 6.22% from similar period in the previous fiscal year, and overcoming the target set for (94.33 million US dollars). Leather goods contributed with 203.10 million US dollars, increasing by 2.94% from the performance in similar period in the previous fiscal year, but missing the target set by 6.56%.
Revenue generated by exports of other footwear (277.86 million US dollars) was up by 13.29% from similar period in the previous fiscal year, but missed the target set for the category in the period (-10.85%).

The Bangladesh Footwear Industry in 2019
According to the World Footwear 2020 Yearbook (AVAILABLE HERE) in 2019 Bangladesh was the 8th largest footwear producer (407 million pairs). The manufacturing industry in the Asian country is much orientated to the internal market with only 79 million pairs exported in 2019 (making this the 18th largest exporter of footwear).
