Argentina: CIMA is calling for protectionism
The Chamber of the Leather Industries in Argentina is worried with the state of the industry and have asked for protection
With the election of Alberto Fernández for the Casa Rosada (the office of the President of Argentina), at the end of October, an era marked by openness to free trade seems to be ending.
The Chamber of the Leather Industries in Argentina - CIMA (Cámara Industrial de Manufacturas del Cuero y Afines) asked the new Executive for protectionism, starting with relations with partners in the Mercosul area. This follows recent news that lower duties for trade could be applied in the near future.
This association is defending too much liberalism already took place and recalls the increase over 120% in imports from 2015 to 2018, in a period marked by lowering internal consumption. The association adds that in the last 4 years turnover of the industry has contracted by 60%, with more than 100 companies closing doors and thousands of people losing their jobs.
