APICCAPS launches campaign to promote leather goods abroad
The know-how accumulated over generations and the constant commitment to professional qualification appear to be the competitive trump cards of the Portuguese leather goods sector, which, in 2022, saw its exports grow by 39%
“Hands are the beginning and end of everything (…). The Portuguese leather goods sector employs hundreds of people who use their hands daily to design, cut, sew, assemble and deliver products that can last a lifetime, reaching more than 50 countries every year. Through them, the Made in Portugal label carries a lexicon of innovation, quality, and design”. This is the motto of the new Portuguese Shoes Leather Goods campaign, promoted by the Portuguese Footwear, Components, Leather Goods Manufacturers’ Association (APICCAPS), with the support of the Compete2030 programme.
The know-how accumulated over generations and the constant commitment to professional qualification appear to be the competitive trump cards of the Portuguese leather goods sector, whose exports amounted to 273 million euros last year, up by 39% compared to 2021. In the first half of the current year, the leather goods exports increased by 18% year-over-year to 150 million euros.
The leather goods sector is growing in all the main economic indicators: the number of companies has increased by 42% in the last decade to 142 and employment has tripled to 3324. “There is a strong tradition of producing excellent leather goods in our country”, says Luís Onofre, “particularly for international luxury brands”. For the president of APICCAPS, “the know-how accumulated over generations is a great competitive advantage for the sector, which must now be exploited”.
