Amazon to expand drone deliveries to the UK and Italy
The Seattle-based online retail giant announced the expansion of the Prime Air drone delivery system to customers in Italy and the UK by the end of 2024. A third US city will also be covered
The new locations, which will be announced in the coming months, will join Amazon’s existing drone delivery operations in the states of California and Texas, where the online retailer has been using drones to deliver packages weighing up to five pounds in one hour or less for almost a year. Amazon plans to start with one site in each location and then expand over time.
To this end, it is “working closely with national regulators and international regulators, and communities in the EU, Italy, the UK, and the US, to develop this program. We have committed the necessary time and resources to build a safe and scalable service. We have refined the technology, and are now building the right infrastructure to ensure the service provides the ultimate convenience for our customers”, it can be read on Amazon’s website.
In addition, Amazon unveiled its latest drone, the MK30 model, which is expected to allow customers who live further away from the company's fulfilment centres to have access to this option. The MK30 has also been built to withstand more extreme weather conditions than those currently used, which will allow its customers to “get super speedy deliveries even in situations like light rain, and hotter and colder temperatures”.
