Alibaba creates anti-counterfeit group
The ecommerce giant established the Alibaba Big Data Anti-Counterfeiting Alliance, whose 20 members include brands such as Louis Vuitton, Swarovski, Huawei and Samsung
Gathering efforts to launch an official coalition has a clear aim: to gather information, data and expertise in intellectual property authentication, with the ultimate goal of fighting the trade of counterfeit goods.
Alibaba launched the Intellectual Property Joint-Force System in June last year, during its first Rights Holders Collaboration Summit in Hangzhou (China), which was attended by representatives from worldwide known brands such as Louis Vuitton, Burberry and Apple.
Alibaba claims is doing daily scans on 10 million product listings, with 180 000 third-party stores being closed in a period of one year, for allegedly trafficking fake items
The counterfeit goods market was estimated at over 1.7 trillion US dollars in 2015, according to numbers release by the International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition. This entity has suspended Alibaba’s membership in May 2016 following a dispute with brands such as Michael Kors and Gucci.
