2023 could bring a loss of 56 million pairs in Europe's consumption
In the latest edition of the World Footwear Business Conditions Survey, we have asked our panel of experts about their perspectives regarding footwear consumption, in their domestic market and globally
On average, our respondents expect footwear consumption to increase 0.3% in 2023 globally and 0.2% in their own countries.
Estimates, as regards the global evolution of footwear consumption in 2023, differ worldwide: in Africa, North America, South America, and Asia it is expected to increase (6%, 4%, 3% and 1%, respectively, on average), while in Europe it is expected to decrease 1%.
As concerns the evolution of footwear consumption in 2023 by country, estimates are consistent with the expected global evolution, but with different magnitudes: in North America, Africa, Asia, and South America respondents, expect, on average, an increase in domestic consumption of 5%, 4%, 3% and 1%, respectively, while European respondents expect footwear consumption to decrease in their own countries by 2%.
As concerns the evolution of footwear consumption in 2023 by country, estimates are consistent with the expected global evolution, but with different magnitudes: in North America, Africa, Asia, and South America respondents, expect, on average, an increase in domestic consumption of 5%, 4%, 3% and 1%, respectively, while European respondents expect footwear consumption to decrease in their own countries by 2%.
Applying these percentages to the consumption by continent reported in the World Footwear Yearbook 2022, should these forecasts prove accurate, footwear consumption this year will increase by 156.4 million pairs in North America, 75.1 in Africa, 354.5 in Asia, 12.4 in South America and fall by 55.6 in Europe.

In 2019 the World Footwear has created the World Footwear' expert panel and is now conducting a Business Conditions Survey every semester.
The objective of the World Footwear Experts Panel Survey is to collect information regarding the current business conditions within the worldwide footwear markets and then to redistribute such information in a way it will provide an accurate overview of the situation of the global footwear industry.
The seventh edition of this online survey was conducted during the month of November 2022. We have obtained 91 valid answers, 57% coming from Europe, 22% from Asia, 8% and 9% from North and South America, respectively, and 4% from Africa. About 30% of the respondents are involved in footwear manufacturing (manufacturers), 18% in footwear trade and distribution (traders), and 52% in other footwear-related activities such as trade associations, consultancy, journalism, etc (others).
