2020: more than 17 500 chain store outlets lost in Great Britain
As the COVID-19 pandemic triggered the worst decline on record: more than 17 500 chain store outlets disappeared from high streets, shopping centres and retail parks across Great Britain last year
According to Local Data Company (LDC), an average of 48 shops, restaurants and other leisure and hospitality venues closed permanently every day across England, Wales and Scotland, and only 21 opened.
With non-essential shops forced to close during the lockdowns and the boom in online shopping, 17 532 outlets shut their doors in 2020. Only 7 655 chain stores were opened. The resulting net closure of 9 877 stores was almost a third higher than in 2019.
Many outlets temporarily closed during lockdowns were not considered as shut but some may never reopen after restrictions are relaxed. Non-essential retail is expected to reopen on the 12th of April in England and Wales and on the 26th of April in Scotland.
