Timberland unveils first sustainable collaboration with CLOT
The US-based casualwear brand and the Hong Kongese streetwear label have joined forces to create an Eastern culture-inspired capsule that uses only eco-innovative materials
The two brands devised a new take on Timberland’s 3-Eye Lug Handsewn boat shoe, created in 1978. Available in 'Black' and 'Wheat' colourways, the shoe, which uses only sustainable materials, was reimagined with an uptilted toe, reminiscent of a growling dragon’s head. The hand-sewn leather uppers have been decorated with a Chinese folk silk embroidery with the form and flames of the dragon. The eco-designed sole uses 34% recycled rubber and the model's leather is guaranteed by the Better Leather label.
"Dragon motifs have always shown up in our designs. It's mystical, it demands power, and it's very representative of Chinese culture. The embroidery is very much an ode to hand-stitch culture back in the day, and abstractly also tattoo culture, because it seems to have translated into Chinese tattoos where dragons and all those old motifs are showing up on people's tattoo artworks", explained the Canadian-born Honk Kong actor Edison Chen, who founded CLOT in 2003.
The capsule collection also includes a matching ready-to-wear line in tan shades, consisting of five workwear-style items with Eastern-inspired details. Accordingly, the line uses only natural and recycled materials, including 100% organically grown cotton and 100% recycled cotton, while heavyweight duck canvas offers rugged protection
"Every step of this design partnership with CLOT has been amazing. To bring the essence of our two brands to life in a collection that is both authentic and progressive was a true creative adventure", commented Chris McGrath, Vice President, Global Footwear Design & Development for Timberland.
